Diet soda?

24 July, 2010 (07:03) | Diet & Fitness | By: Slim

violet asked:

I drink a ton of diet soda. I don’t care to hear if it’s unhealthy cuz frankly all I care about is being thin, but I’ve heard that maybe it actually promotes weight gain? apart from the theory that it makes you crave carbs and sugar, is this true?
I mean I know it could be unhealthy.
What I wanna know is, will it make me gain weight?

I think a calorie is a calorie. It’s not as nutritious as other foods you could be having & reaks havoc on your enamel. at most soda causes bloating and insulin levels to spike and go down which may make you hungrier sometimes

some of the ingredients do pormote weight gain, while others strip nutrients which cause you to eat more food… the best thing is too drink water, not only will your skin be more beautiful it will not strip you of nutrients and will aid in food digestion….

diet soda actually causes weight gain indirectly cause it helps to absorb all the nutrients thus digesting the little food we eat. when my cousing switched from cola to diet coke she actually gained weight. then after she switched to water she just looked like those gymnatic ladies.

it does promote weight gain
there is something called aspartame in it
aspartame is taken from sugar
it turns str8 into fat insted of being processed by your body
so you actually gain more weight per ounce of diet soda then normal

Does this help? I found it in this article:

Young people who substitute milk for soda have an increased risk of suffering from osteoporosis at an earlier age due to the bone leaching properties of soda and the absence of adequate calcium in their diet. Caffeine in sodas can be addictive to certain people and it also promotes dehydration despite being a fluid. There is a thought that consumption of diet soda stimulates people to crave sugary foods, supporting a recent study that found that people who were more likely to drink diet soda were obese.

Quite frankly, diet or non-diet isn’t really going to make a difference in whether you gain weight or not unless you drink large amounts of soda daily. In your case, not gaining weight wouldn’t be done by picking diet over non-diet, but by drink less soda.

yes it is true, diet soda’s make you gain wait because it contains an ingredient called Aspartame which is a stimulant in your brain and is very harmful, and has been proven to be a cuase of cancer. Drinking diet soda’s will not make you lose weight, they are more unhealthy for you than a regular soda, even if it doesn’t have any calories. I’ve been drinking diet soda’s ever since i was 8 or 9, and in the last 3 months i have quit drinking sodas, and i have lost 14 pounds, and i feel a lot better.

In regards to a recent University of Texas Study that finds a correlation between drinking diet soda and weight gain:

Fowler is quick to note that a study of this kind does not prove that diet soda causes obesity. More likely, she says, it shows that something linked to diet soda drinking is also linked to obesity….

…”One possible part of the explanation is that people who see they are beginning to gain weight may be more likely to switch from regular to diet soda,” Fowler suggests. “But despite their switching, their weight may continue to grow for other reasons. So diet soft-drink use is a marker for overweight and obesity.” …

The study’s author hypothesizes that your body will crave the “promised calories” that it thinks its getting when you drink diet soda, but provides no evidence.

So to answer your question, the latest studies show a correlation between consuming diet soda and weight gain but no causality.

If you’re wanting to stay at a healthy weight (which is what I hope you’re doing) the best thing to do is drink lots of water. Diet soda can cause weight gain from what I’ve heard/read. If you’re not a big water fan just give it time. I’m not a huge water fan, but I notice the more I drink it the more I want. I hope this helps.

It seems like one of the simpler calorie-cutting weight loss choices you can make: Drop sugar-laden sodas for the sugar-free versions. But not so fast–diet-soda drinkers are more likely to become overweight or obese than those who choose full-calorie beverages, finds a new study from doctors at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.

When the docs tracked the weight of 1,550 men and women, they found that 57% of those who drank two or more cans of diet soda a day had become overweight after 8 years, compared with 47% of those who sipped on regular drinks.

Well, diet soda is not as unhealthy for you as real soda, but it is not the healthy alternative. It does increase the chance of you developing a lot more cravings for sugar and carbohydrates so to answer your question, yes! A little pitch of advice, is if you want to sasy healthy and upbeat stay away from soda completely. Resort to a sweet, yet healthy alternatice such as green tea or juice! Hope you have a merry christmas
